Westport Middle-High School
The first time I met Mr.Monast was in 7th grade doing an introduction of ourselves. I normally dread this part of any class but he ensured that each student was heard and respected. He commented on each student’s stories. I remember being so impressed that he knew enough to accurately comment on my peers’ interests. I’ve never seen a teacher attempt to comment on students’ interests let alone do it for the entire class. This always stuck with me as the culmination of what he values as a person and through his teaching: acceptance and connection. Monast goes beyond his role, extending his passion for teaching through Esports club, Maker space, the annual Talent Show, and Exchange/Travel club. It is without question that the high demand to travel would be nonexistent without the relationships Monast has developed with his students. He goes out of his way to ensure that the library is a safe place for all students and creates a learning environment where students can feel free to make mistakes for they are signs of trying. Mr. Monast is an exemplar of exceptional teaching and going far beyond what is expected of him. His love for his career and students goes without saying and serves as a true testament to his character.
