Kimberly Johnson

Gloucester City High School

Gloucester City, NJ

Miss Johnson is the kind of teacher you don’t forget. She doesn’t just teach math—she makes it feel possible, even for students who have always struggled with it. One time, she stayed after school three days in a row just to help me and a couple of other students prepare for a big Precalculus test. She used different ways to explain things until we got it, and she never made us feel dumb for asking questions. I ended up doing way better than I thought I could, and it changed how I saw myself as a student. She also brings real energy to the classroom. Math class with her isn’t boring—she connects topics to real life and even adds stories or jokes that help things stick. She’s big on routines and structure, which makes class feel safe and consistent. And even when she’s clearly busy or tired, she makes time to check in with students about more than just school. She remembers our interests, how our games went, and even when someone has a rough day, she notices. Outside the classroom, Miss Johnson helps lead the school’s volleyball team and supports players like they’re her own. She’s also involved in organizing school events and encourages other teachers by always being positive and willing to help. You can tell she genuinely cares about this school and its students. She’s the kind of teacher who makes you want to show up, work harder, and believe you can actually succeed.

Miss Johnson is one of those teachers that other teachers and students always recognize for going above and beyond. Even though she teaches at our school, she also coaches volleyball at another school, which just shows how much she’s willing to give her time and energy to help students succeed wherever she is. At our school, she runs the Ski and Board Club and helps out with the Indoor Track Club, and students love being part of those groups because of her energy and positivity. She’s the kind of teacher other staff members trust to get things done. Whether it’s planning a trip for Ski Club or organizing something for track, people know she’ll follow through and make it fun and meaningful. Other teachers mention how organized and committed she is, and it’s clear she’s respected by both students and staff. Even at school events or during busy times, you’ll see her helping out, making sure everything runs smoothly. She’s constantly stepping up, and people notice. You don’t have to be in her class to know she’s someone who makes a difference.

Miss Johnson has faced a lot of challenges at our school, but she never lets them stop her from showing up and doing her best for us. When she first started teaching here, she didn’t have a lot of resources or support, but she still found creative ways to make math engaging. She made her own worksheets, came up with fun ways to review for tests, and even found time to help students one-on-one when we were struggling. You could tell she was figuring things out as she went, but she never gave up on us. One big thing that stood out was how she handled tough behavior in class. Instead of yelling or writing students up right away, she set clear expectations and talked to us like real people. She created a classroom routine that helped us stay focused and respectful, even when things got chaotic in the hallways or during tough parts of the year. She also adapted really well during schedule changes and all the interruptions that happen during the school year. Some teachers get thrown off, but Miss Johnson always kept class running smoothly. She finds ways to keep things consistent so we don’t fall behind. And even though math can be a hard subject, she always tries new ways to explain things so everyone can understand. She’s the kind of teacher who faces challenges head-on and uses them as motivation to do better—for herself and for us.
