Seed School Los Angeles

Los Angeles, CA

As a male educator in South Los Angeles, this teacher embodies what it means to invest wholly in the future of our youth. When the school lacked the funding to hire additional staff, he stepped up and took on three different computer science classes: Cybersecurity, Introduction to Computer Science, and AP Computer Science Principles. He saw it as an opportunity to plant seeds of curiosity and confidence in a field where many of his students, especially young Black and Brown learners, rarely see themselves represented. But he didn’t stop at the classroom door. He launched a robotics club from scratch, building not just a team but a safe, thriving space for kids to explore, innovate, and compete. All year long, students committed their evenings and weekends to prepare for robotics competitions across Los Angeles. He worked with these students to inspire, demonstrate teamwork, and pride. His passion is deeply rooted in his role as a founding faculty member of the first public boarding school in South LA. He’s since risen to lead the science department, but he continues to teach with the same hands-on, heart-first approach. His classroom is a hub of hope where academic rigor meets real-world relevance, and students are constantly reminded that they are capable of greatness.

What stands out about Mr.Mendoza isn’t just his skill, it’s the heart behind everything he does. Nearly every student and teacher on campus has felt the impact of his presence. Whether it’s helping a colleague plan a lesson, mentoring a new teacher, or staying late to support a student who’s struggling, he’s the one everyone knows they can count on. His students talk about him with genuine respect. You hear things like, “He’s the reason I’m taking computer science seriously,” or “He made me feel like I could actually do this.” That kind of impact goes far beyond a test score. Students often talk about how different it feels to be in his class. He makes them feel seen, capable, and challenged in the best way. One student put it simply: “He’s the first teacher who made me feel smart in math or science.” His influence reaches families too. A parent recently shared that their son suddenly started showing real motivation after taking his computer science class. “For the first time, he was excited about school. He started doing his homework without me reminding him, and even talked about wanting to go to college and study technology.” And among staff, he’s seen as a quiet leader. He doesn’t ask for recognition, but he earns it through consistency, care, and his commitment to doing what’s best for kids. In the community, it’s rare to find someone who takes on so much and still makes everyone around him feel supported.

Teaching in South LA comes with real challenges, from limited funding to the emotional weight many students carry with them. But Mr.Mendoza doesn’t let those obstacles define what’s possible. When he took on three computer science courses, he didn’t have a pre-set curriculum or textbook for guidance. He built it all, often learning new material on his own time so his students could have a real shot at thriving in a tech-driven world. He’s also incredibly thoughtful about how he motivates students. He knows that success isn’t just academic, it’s emotional and behavioral too. He’s created systems in his classroom that reward growth, consistency, and leadership, not just grades. When the robotics team he founded entered their first competition, they were nervous. Other teams had better equitment, big sponsors, and years of experience. But his students walked in with robot they built from scratch and the kind of confidence that only comes from knowing someone believes in you. They walked out of these placing in the top 10, and left with their heads high, knowing they earned their spot. As a founding teacher and now department chair, he continues to lead with creativity, compassion, and vision. He’s the kind of educator who redefines what’s possible, not just for his classroom, but for the whole school.
